Frequently Asked Questions?
How many times can this media be recycled? (click for answer)
You can maybe recycle coal slag a couple times if you start with the coarse size, but not recommended due to the high friability and dust levels.
Is coal slag safe to use? (click for answer)
Yes, coal slag is perfectly safe to use with proper safety equipment. While it is a much safer alternative to silica sand, coal slag is a waste product and may contain traces of heavy metals like beryllium, arsenic, and chromium. Paired with the high dust levels, it is important to wear properly certified safety equipment (as it is with all types of media).
How much does it cost? (click for answer)
About $0.20 per pound. $400 per ton / $10 per bag. Sold in 50 & 80 lb bags, 3,000 & 4,000 lb super sacks
Usage & Typical Applications
Coal slag is primarily used for open blasting on structural steel, bridges, tanks, ships, pipelines, and heavy equipment where fast production and low media cost are important.
How to Choose the Right Grit Size?
Select the particle size based on desired profile and surface condition — finer grits for delicate surfaces, coarser grits for heavy rust/scale removal.
